Photographs or the last supper?

30 January 2011

Some people will get into photography because they are bored. Some because their friends are into it. While others because they have the eye to shoot a moment and give it life. Photography always interests me but not as one who clicks the shutter, but one who looks at the final print. In the Philippines very few people will frame a beautiful black and white or colored photograph because they prefer to hang the Last Supper instead. In the province, they prefer the huge black and red calendar given by the local Chinese-owned hardware store. We also think that photographs are dime a dozen. I guess in our minds, a machine in a corner space inside a shopping mall easily produces those photographs.

In other countries, photographs are part of making their homes beautiful. They celebrate their photographers, and they can achieve world fame. Some of them are like rock stars.
Some will follow a creative calling and produce some very interesting photographs.

Christian Tagliavini is one such artist whose love for the arts goes beyond just clicking the shutter. I do not remember how I end up at his site but I was thankful I did (his name alone is interesting). He uses regular people as models. He designs the costumes and does the entire production design all for the love of photography.

I asked him a few questions:

KISH – Was reading your bio and you mentioned that you are self-thought. You mean you did not study photography at all? Was it a challenge?

Christian – No, I didn’t study photography. and I’m not looking for a challenge with myself.
I like making the set, project, do search and so much more around photography. I only want to show my ability.

K – Your 1503 photographs are amazing. What difficulties did you encounter during the process to come up with such beautiful photographs?

C – Create the illusion. I didn’t use retouch tools to extend necks.
You know, I used Photoshop to recreate the right renaissance mood.

K – Why photography?

C – I don’t know. It just arrived.

K Any dream project?
C – A solo exhibition in big town.

K – I noticed that you used regular people as models. Will you also consider using professional models?

C – I often use “normal people” but sometimes also people from modeling agencies.

His 1503 portfolio says it all.
